 About the project

The Oregon Library Personnel Continuing Education Project, funded by an LSTA grant from the Oregon State Library, consists of a needs assessment and service delivery model analysis. The project was put forth by Director of Libraries, Donna Reed, on behalf of Portland Community College. PCC has played a bridging role in continuing education for library personnel since the demise of the Portland metro PORTALS consortium. That bridging role has included administering limited and dwindling residual PORTALS CE funds, planning continuing education events in the Portland area with the use of those funds, and managing the CE online clearinghouse Northwest Central.

The bridging role also includes determining, through this grant project, what CE model would best serve the Oregon library community. The elements of this grant include a statewide continuing education needs assessment, the study of various CE model options, and a business plan for the optimum Oregon model. Ruth Metz Associates, Portland, OR., is coordinating the needs assessment process and the work of six regional consultants. In the spring of 2010, the regional consultants are gathering data through meetings, interviews, and other regional research. The consulting coordinator, Ruth Metz, is studying various statewide models, including those of Washington, Idaho, and California. An online survey of Oregon library personnel will follow in June, and then one of library managers. In the summer of 2010, a report will summarize “what is, what could be, and how to get there.”

Regional Meetings

Regional meetings for the Oregon Library Personnel Continuing Education needs assessment will begin the week of April 12, 2010 and continue through May.  So that we can plan our meetings well, please register directly with the regional consultant in the region of your choosing.
