The Oregon Health Sciences Libraries Association (OHSLA) is sponsoring a 4 hour class on basic anatomy and physiology that might be of interest for librarians working in the health sciences or basic sciences. It will be taught by Britta Torgrimson, a PhD candidate at U of O.
The course will cover 4 major areas in Anatomy and Physiology as a way to explore the wide range of information available in this field today. First, it will cover some of the basics of human anatomy and have hands on experience looking at real human bones. The discussion will include an introduction to bone mineral density, DEXA scanning, osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, forensics, and bone health in humans. The second section, we will be about cardiovascular physiology. This discussion will focus on how the heart, lungs, muscles, and blood vessels work together in healthy humans at rest and during exercise. The third section, will take this knowledge of human anatomy and physiology to explore the biology of some of the major diseases our culture is facing today including coronary artery disease, stroke, obesity, and chronic stress and depression. Finally, as a way to apply the new knowledge to current controversial issues, there will be a discussion about the controversy surrounding the Women
