Supporting and Engaging the Teens in Your Library: Meeting the Challenge
Presented on November 2, 2010 at King County Library System Service Center, Issaquah
and on
November 4, 2010 at the North Central Regional Library Headquarters in Wenatchee
David Wilmes, Director of Saint Paul Youth Services and Karen Kolb Peterson, Youth Services Manager, Saint Paul Public Library provided practical solutions and shared their experience welcoming diverse populations of teens while preserving the behavioral norms of the library.
This training included:
- Outlining the stages of youth development and how to establish positive behavior norms
- Providing insight into bullying and the minimization of environmental factors
- Explaining common struggles for power and respect, especially with survival-based youth, including growth versus survival and teaching youth to use their personal power in a constructive way
- Teaching behavior management tools including understanding typical stages, turning problem behavior into educational opportunity for youth, and focusing on limits that instruct
- Focus on planning, including an overview of social marketing concepts and building a plan for staff success
