Re: Basics of Records Management and Archives Workshops
The State Historical Records Advisory Board (SHRAB), headed by the Oregon Secretary of State, Archives Division, received a Federal Grant to present "Basics of Records Management" and "Basics of Archives" Workshops. The workshops will be presented by Archives Division staff member Dan Cantrall, CRM. Other presenters from the Archives Division, the SHRAB, and the Oregon Association of Municipal Recorders may assist in the presentations at selected workshops. These workshops are open to all city, county and special district employees, library employees, local historical society employees and interested members of the general public. There is no cost to attend, and the workshops will be presented from 9 AM to 4:00 PM, with one hour allowed for lunch. We will cover Records Management topics in the AM session and Archives topics in the PM session. Attendees are invited to come to either session, or to attend both sessions.
The "Basics of Records Management" session is an overview of best practices in records management. The focus will be on covering topics of interest to public governmental agencies. However, private agencies and individuals may also attend and may find the material useful because there is a strong intersection of records management procedure and practice between public and private entities.
Topics include:
Records Management Background
Legal Framework in General - Compliance and Regulations
Oregon-Specific Records Management Requirements
Records Storage Issues
Electronic Records - Special Considerations
Establishing an Essential Records Program / Records Disaster Recovery Highlights
Promoting your Records Management Program
Summary: Utilize the principles of GARP®
The "Basics of Archives" session is an abbreviated version of the well-attended course we presented in 2007. This session focuses on best practices in setting up and maintaining institutional archives.
Topics include:
Introduction to Archives and Archivists
What Do You Collect and How You Collect It
Processing
Access and Outreach
